Answer to Question 1

The alternative energy molecules, ketones, are formed
from fatty acids when there is not sufficient glucose
available to support normal cellular function. Initially,
low glucose availability is remedied with hepatic glucose
production in the form of gluconeogenesis, using muscle
protein as a source of amino acids. Ketogenesis limits
the amount of glucose that must be produced from
amino acids, and may therefore be considered to be both
glucose sparing and protein sparing. For these reasons, a
low-carbohydrate diet will induce ketosis (as will fasting or
near-fasting).

There are major differences in the metabolism of morphine and the illegal drug heroin. Morphine mostly produces its CNS effects through m-receptors, and at k- and d-receptors. Heroin has a slight affinity for opiate receptors. Most of its actions are due to metabolism to active metabolites (6-acetylmorphine, morphine, and morphine-6-glucuronide).
