Why is it important that blood glucose levels be regulated, and how is this accomplished?

Since the brain and other components of the nervous system rely heavily on glucose as their main energy source, it is critical to maintain blood glucose levels. Insulin and glucagon, while they have the opposite effect, work together to maintain blood glucose levels and energy stores. Insulin functions to facilitate the uptake of glucose into cells, thus lowering blood glucose levels. Insulin promotes energy storage in the form of glycogen and fat. Glucagon acts in opposition to insulin. Glucagon stimulates the breakdown of glycogen stores, ultimately resulting in an increase in blood sugar.
