Many people believe that it is good to give all of the organs of the digestive system a rest during a juice cleanse. If there is little protein in the food, the stomach will not need to secrete as much hydrochloric acid or pepsin. If there is little fat in the foods of the cleanse, the liver will not need to release as much bile and the pancreas will not need to release as much lipase to break down the fats. It has not been shown that the organs of the digestive system need a rest to function optimally.
