These foods contain cellulose and resistant starches that are not easily broken down by bacteria in the colon. This creates roughage which helps bulk up stools and shorten the time it takes for the stools to pass through the colon. This may reduce the risk of irritation in the colon and may reduce changes in the cells that line the colon.
