Answer to Question 2

High fructose corn syrup is produced by corn that is treated with enzymes to break down the complex carbohydrates into fructose and glucose (http://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/crops/sugar-sweeteners/background.aspx). Sugar is extracted from sugar cane and is crystallized. (http://www.food-info.net/uk/products/sugar/prodcane.htm). Both of these products require processing beyond what is naturally food in the foods of their origin.
