Answer to Question 1

Prevention of stroke through lifestyle changes and use of medications to lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and thereby minimize atherosclerosis, is an important measure. Aspirin, warfarin, and other anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications can also reduce risk of ischemic stroke in those at risk. However, when prevention fails, other measures must be taken quickly for optimal outcome. The longer the blood supply to the brain is impaired, the more extensive the damage. Thus, the first priority in acute care following ischemic stroke is to eliminate the clot and restore blood flow.
