Trans fatty acids found in margarine may be as likely to boost blood levels of bad LDL cholesterol as the saturated fat found in butter. What's more, the research suggests that in large amounts, trans fatty acids lower good HDL cholesterol in the blood. In addition, an analysis by researchers at Harvard University suggested that more than 30,000 American deaths each year are attributable to trans fatty acids.
