Answer to Question 1

Treatment strategies include weight loss (if overweight); regular meals and snacks; a diet emphasizing high-fiber grains, vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy, and fish (emphasizing unsaturated and minimizing saturated or trans fat); and regular physical activity. Prevention strategies are similar, and include a low-glycemic index diet, smoking cessation, and adequate vitamin D and magnesium intakes.

Answer to Question 2

The development of this common type of diabetes is most likely to occur in overweight and obese, inactive people. Approximately 60 of people who develop type 2 diabetes are obese, and 30 are overweight.
