Answer to Question 1

The kidneys help to regulate blood pressure by secreting the enzyme renin. Renin catalyzes the formation of angiotensin I from the plasma protein angiotensinogen. In the lungs and elsewhere, angiotensin I is converted to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor that narrows the diameters of arterioles and thereby raises blood pressure. Angiotensin II also stimulates the release of aldosterone, an adrenal hormone that induces the kidneys to increase reabsorption of sodium and water; this increases plasma volume, which raises blood pressure. The kidneys produce the hormone erythropoietin, which stimulates the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. The kidneys convert vitamin D to its active form, thereby helping to regulate calcium balance and bone formation.
