Why do AI/RDA levels for these substances generally increase during this time?

You now should have much more knowledge about why consuming adequate amounts of the water-soluble vitamins is important during the lifespanespecially during critical periods of growth and development such as pregnancy. Recall Nancy from the Everybody Has a Story feature at the beginning of this chapter. Can you list at least 2 reasons why each of the water-soluble vitamins is needed to support a healthy pregnancy?

Answer to Question 1

The pregnant mothers expansion of blood cells and increase in body weight demand more essential nutrients. In this case, the water-soluble vitamins are necessary for optimal protein synthesis, to meet increased energy demands of both pregnancy and fetal growth and development, and for antioxidant protection.

Answer to Question 2

1) Water-soluble vitamins are essential for the growth and development of the fetus.
2) Water-soluble vitamins are needed for protein synthesis and antioxidant protection of the pregnant mother and fetus.
