Answer to Question 1

For: Probiotics are generally considered safe and studies show that they can help in the prevention or treatment of antibiotic-associated disorders, in the treatment (and to a lesser extent prevention) of gastroenteritis (stomach inflammation) and diarrhea, and in the alleviation of lactose intolerance. However, more research is needed to fully justify those claims. Probiotics can increase regularity and decrease the frequency of IBS symptoms.
Against: There is insufficient evidence that probiotics are always beneficial and never harmful. Not all studies of probiotics are well controlled or sufficient to demonstrate efficacy. Some probiotics cause gas or bloating in some people. People with underlying health conditions (such as short bowel syndrome, a weakened immune system, or recent surgery) may not be able to tolerate them. Due to a lack of strict FDA regulation, various probiotic products may not consistently contain the correct type of probiotics or enough of them to have an effect.
