Answer to Question 1

Celiac disease is an autoimmune malabsorption disorder that occurs when the lining of the small intestine flattens due to an abnormal reaction to gluten, a protein found in wheat and other grains, such as barley and rye. Symptoms include recurring abdominal bloating, cramping, diarrhea, gas, fatty and foul-smelling stools, weight loss, anemia, fatigue, bone or joint pain, and even a painful skin rash. Complications from celiac disease include osteoporosis, diminished growth, and even seizures due to inadequate folate absorption. Treatment involves consuming a gluten-free diet.

Answer to Question 2

Alcohol produces a diuretic effect by inhibiting the release of antidiuretic hormone, which causes the kidneys to excrete water in the urine, causing dehydration (and electrolyte imbalances). Additionally, vomiting and sweating during and after consuming too much alcohol further contribute to dehydration.
