There are three types of pollutants: toxic compounds, , and biological pollution. Toxic compounds impact ecosystems by poisoning living organisms and accumulating in food chains and food webs. Examples of toxic pollutants include hydrocarbons (such as oil), pesticides such as DDT, and heavy metals such as mercury and lead Biological pollutants are non-native species introduced to marine ecosystems through human activities. Without natural predators in their new environment, non-native species can quickly multiply and become invasive, displacing native species from their niches in the ecosystem. Zebra mussels and water hyacinths are examples of introduced invasive aquatic species.
