Answer to Question 1

A

Answer to Question 2

Surface currents that move quickly across the equator bring warm water toward higher latitudes. As the water moves away from tropical latitudes, some of the heat is transferred to the atmosphere. The colder water becomes denser and sinks to greater depths of the ocean, where it moves back to low latitudes, absorbs heat, and repeats the cycle. This transport of tropical water and heat to higher latitudes is part of a global heat conveyor belt bringing heat via water to latitudes that without it would have much colder climates. For example, the coastal regions of Europe are warmed by heat that originated in the ocean around Indonesia and Australia.
