ANS: B
Richard Oldham reasoned that a dense fluid within the Earth absorbed the S waves. He expanded his
theory to include the prediction of shadow zones where the S waves did not occur due to that dense
liquid. Information can be found in the section The Study of Earthquakes Provides Evidence of
Layering.

The lithosphere includes continental and oceanic crust and the uppermost portion of the cool and rigid
