Richard Oldham reasoned that a dense fluid within the Earth absorbed the S waves. He expanded his
theory to include the prediction of shadow zones where the S waves did not occur due to that dense

Layering.

The lithosphere includes continental and oceanic crust and the uppermost portion of the cool and rigid
