Your friend is trying to stop smoking and you suggest she try using a nicotine patch. She resists your suggestion thinking the patch can't work.
 
  Talking with her, you realize she doesn't understand how nicotine could pass through her skin, which seems solid. What activity have we done already this summer could you do with her to help her understand? How would this activity help explain the probable mechanism by which the nicotine patch is working?

The peppermint balloon activity should help her understand that even things that seem like they are solid can have holes that, while too small to see, are large enough for sub-microscopic particles (in this case, the nicotine) to pass through.
