Answer to Question 1

The particles of the liquid are like the metal shot. There must be some empty space between the particles and they can pack tighter and use up some of the space when they are mixed.

Answer to Question 2

The small shot were able to take up space between the large shot. This was particularly clear when the first 10 mls or so of small shot are added and the volume of the large shot doesn't increase at all. The volume only starts to go up when all the spaces between the large shot are filled.
