Answer to Question 1

A child over a year can get a condition called milk anemia. Drinking too much milk can prevent the child from getting proper nutrients from other foods, especially those with iron in them.

Answer to Question 2

Family-style meals where the child self-selects are used in less than half of early childhood education environments. Teachers need to have a greater understanding that self-selection and family-style meals should be the norm because it is a healthier practice and a recommended standard from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American public. Flexibility is an important factor in allowing a child to master his or her self-feeding skills, which may mean allowing a child who is self-serving food to take too much or too little at the beginning of this process. It is important for a child to learn to distinguish between feeling hungry and being full. The teacher can sit at the table with the children and eat the food that is served family style. The teacher can role model and encourage the children to try all food types offered and talk about the food.
