Since the bile salts are bound they are not available for reabsorption in the large intestine and recycling to cholesterol in the liver and so will be lost in the feces. This deprives the body of a major source of cholesterol and the loss will need to be made up by increased liver synthesis. Overall, a drop in circulating cholesterol will result.
