The patient is a 14-year-old gymnast who complains of pain in her left leg after vaulting at practice. She is unable to bear any weight on her foot. Her foot and ankle appeared normal on physical exam. The neurovascular status of the foot was normal. Findings were confined to the distal fibula, two inches proximal to the lateral malleolus. There was point tenderness in this area. An X-ray of the tibia and fibula shows a displaced fracture of the distal fibula. The patient underwent a closed reduction of her fibular fracture and was placed in a short leg splint with extensive padding over the fracture site. She was given Tylenol No. 3 for pain and instructed to follow up with her physician in ten days.
