It has been demonstrated that personality variables such as impulsiveness and emotional instability might be associated with a greater likelihood of developing alcoholism. Physiological differences in responses to alcohol have also been seen in pre-alcoholic men with a family history of alcoholism. It may be that those who are vulnerable to alcoholism derive more pleasure from alcohol use and/or may have a larger conditioned response to alcohol-related cues.

The model that has perhaps been most influential is the
five-factor model. This builds on the five-factor model of normal
personality mentioned earlier to help researchers understand the
commonalities and distinctions among the different personality
disorders by assessing how these individuals score on the
five basic personality traits
