Answer to Question 1

Normative comparisons require looking at a person's score as it compares with the scores of a sample of people who are representative of the entire population with regard to key characteristics (age, sex, etc.) or with scores of a subgroup who are similar to the patient being assessed. Self-referent comparisons are those that compare responses on various instruments with the patient's own prior performance, and they are used most often to examine the course of symptoms over time.
