Answer to Question 1

Phytochemicals represent another category of substances found in food. The term phytochemical (phyto is Greek for plant) means compounds found in plants that are bioactive but are not essential nutrients for sustaining life. Later, when we discuss the concept of food as medicine, we will focus on beneficial phytochemicals.

Answer to Question 2

Macronutrients are the big nutrients, those that we consume in large quantities to fulfill our energy requirements, whereas the micronutrients are the essential substances we need in very small quantities, the vitamins and minerals. Macronutrients further divide into the three categories of carbohydrates, protein, and fat.
