Answer to Question 1

Restriction of range problems and power are two factors common to both types of
rating. A restriction of range results when supervisor ratings are clustered around one
part of the scale, leading to very weak distinctions between employees. Similarly, selfratings show a restriction of range in that most ratings cluster in the positive end of the
scale. Power can also affect both rating types. Supervisors with power, compared to
those without power, tend to give lower performance ratings to subordinate others,
whereas individuals with high levels of power rate themselves exceptionally favorably.
