Compare two theories of aging. Based on what you have observed of aging in relatives and people in your community, which theory do you think is most accurate? Support your answer with specific examples.

Answer to Question 1

Answers should acknowledge the fact that the body does not wear out like a
machine but can repair itself and replace damaged cells. However, there is a
slowdown of functions. The other theories deal with cellular accidents (free
radicals), decline in the effectiveness of immune system, and genetic
preprogramming (end of cell division).

Answer to Question 2

Answers will vary but may focus on several areas: the present physical condition of
elderly relatives, health habits of the individual, and the potential for development of
cures for illnesses such as arthritis, heart disease, and cancer.
