Anorexia is characterized by voluntary starvation, while bulimia nervosa is
characterized by bingeing and purging. For anorexia to be diagnosed, the following
symptoms must be present: refusal to maintain a weight that is at least 85 of
normal BMI, intense fear of weight gain, disturbed/distorted body perception, and
absence of a menstrual period. For bulimia to be diagnosed, the following symptoms
must be present: bingeing and purging at least one time per week for 3 months,
uncontrollable urges to eat, and distorted perception of body size.
Answer to Question 2
Answers will vary but can include the following pros and cons: Research on
adolescent brains has shown that starting school later in the morning more closely
follows the adolescent's normal sleeping and waking pattern and results in teens
being less likely to fall asleep in class and more able to learn. However, many
parents and other adults have their own reasons for wanting school to start earlier:
bus drivers don't want to drive in rush hour traffic, cafeteria workers want to be
home earlier, coaches want after-school activities to end before dark, etc.
