Answer to Question 1

The five ways are meeting basic needs (for food, clothes, and shelter), encouraging
learning, developing self-esteem, nurturing peer friendship, and providing harmony
and stability. Students should be able to give a good description of how their families
succeeded or let them down.

Answer to Question 2

Students' answers will vary, but Table 13.3 provides a quick overview. Some of the
more salient factors in determining how well a child does in a single-parent home
include the parent's maturity and age, his or her income, the stability of the situation,
and the parent's overall social situation. In and of itself, a single-parent household
does not have to be a negative situation for the child.
