Answer to Question 1

Egocentrism in Piagetian terminology means that young children assume that
everyone else experiences and perceives the world exactly as they do. For
example, if a child is standing on top of a hill and can see a lake in the distance, she
might yell down to her older brother and ask him to comment on the beauty of the lake, even though the older brother can't see it. Egocentrism in common usage is
synonymous with being self-centered or concerned only with oneself. For example,
a person, child or adult, will not want to share a favorite toy or item with another
individual simply because it is his. Of course, any examples that clearly demonstrate
the difference in the usage of the terms are acceptable.

Answer to Question 2

This question allows a wide range of creativity in the answer. The most important
thing is to be sure that students support their ideas with relevant research and/or
experience. They must include consideration of the needs of families in which the
parent or parents must work for the family to survive; the needs of preschool
children from biosocial, cognitive, and psychosocial perspectives; and the needs of
society as a whole. Make sure students address each component of this question.
