A gender-role standard refers to the behavior, value, and motive that members of a society consider typical for one sex or the other. For girls and women in Western culture, an expressive role is the gender-role standard. This role focuses on nurturing and other characteristics presumed to promote ability to care for children. For boys and men in Western culture, an instrumental role is the standard. This role focuses on self-reliance, dominance, and other characteristics presumed to promote one's ability to earn a living and care for a family.
