Answer to Question 1

There are three aspects to emotional competence: expressivity, emotional knowledge, and emotional regulation. Denham and colleagues measured these components in children at age three/four and again in kindergarten, along with assessments of social competence. At age three/four, emotional expressivity predicted both emotional knowledge and emotional regulation. But only emotional regulation abilities predicted social competence at that age. By kindergarten, a different pattern emerged in the data: emotional expressivity and emotional knowledge had increased in importance to social competence, while emotional regulation had decreased.
