Answer to Question 1

The student should assert that psychoactive drugs, both legal and illegal, are classified into the following categories: stimulants, depressants, cannabis, hallucinogens, and opiates. Examples of legal stimulants include caffeine and nicotine. Illegal stimulants are cocaine. Examples of legal depressants are alcohol and illegal depressants are certain solvents. Cannabis is an illegal substance that in low doses produces a sedative effect. Hallucinogens are illegal substances such LSD and mescaline. These produce euphoria and a distorted sense of reality. The opiates include legal prescription drugs such as codeine and illegal drugs like opium and heroin. These are sleep-inducing painkillers.
