Answer to Question 1

Although they vary in parent-child relationships, there are three basic types of stepfamilies:
In a motherstepfather family, all the children are biological children of the mother and stepchildren of the father.
In a fatherstepmother family, all the children are biological children of the father and stepchildren of the mother.
In a joint stepfamily, at least one child is the biological child of both parents, at least one child is the biological child of only one parent and the stepchild of the other parent, and no other type of child is present.
Stepfamilies can be even more complicated. In a complex stepfamily, both adults have children from previous marriages. And in joint stepadoptive families and in joint biologicalstepadopt ive families, at least one child is a biological child of one parent and a stepchild of the other parent, and one or both parents have adopted at least one child.
