Answer to Question 1

There is limited compensation via the lungs, as reducing pulmonary ventilation to increase alveolar carbon dioxide tension would compromise oxygenation. Compensation by the kidneys is inefficient with potassium deficiency, which accentuates it by forming more bicarbonates.

Answer to Question 2

A lump in the breast may be any of these possibilities: cyst, adenoma, a carcinoma, or any disease involving the breast. A definitive diagnosis may be obtained through a biopsy.
