When the WOC and the WIC differ, an algorithm selects the most appropriate value for the reported white cell count. Newborn samples, which contain a high concentration of fetal hemoglobin, are an example of when a discrepancy might exist between the two. The soft lysing agent used in the WOC channel is unable to completely lyse the red cells, raising the WOC count compared with the WIC.
