Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
Erythropoiesis is increased (erythroid hyperplasia) in the bone marrow in hemolytic anemia, with no change in the production of granulocytes. The M:E ratio will therefore be decreased (i.e., more erythroid precursors relative to myeloid). Overall cellularity of the bone marrow is increased so that less fat exists.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
Schistocytes are fragmented red cells that result when the red cell membrane is damaged by trauma as can be seen in some intravascular hemolytic anemias.

For about 100 years, scientists thought that peptic ulcers were caused by stress, spicy food, and alcohol. Later, researchers added stomach acid to the list of causes and began treating ulcers with antacids. Now it is known that peptic ulcers are predominantly caused by Helicobacter pylori, a spiral-shaped bacterium that normally exist in the stomach.
