A client is experiencing acute exacerbation of ulcerative colitis with 12 to 16 bloody stools per day and cramping abdominal pain. The nurse should explain that to promote bowel rest the client should expect to receive:
 
  1. intravenous corticosteroids.
  2. total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for 2 weeks.
  3. nothing by mouth (NPO) for several days.
  4. a nasogastric tube
