Answer to Question 1

The damaged areas of the lung tend to be more common in the lower areas of the lung causing the patient to be short of breath with decreased oxygen saturation while standing. Symptoms are relieved by lying down.

Answer to Question 2

An embolus is a plug that occludes a blood vessel. The plug may be a clot that has broken away from the original site of injury, a mass of bacteria, or a foreign body. A thrombus is a blood clot. A thrombus may or may not occlude the blood vessel.
A cardiogenic embolism describes a clot that originates in the heart and enters the circulation. The embolus may pass into the lungs, creating a pulmonary embolism, or to the brain, resulting in a stroke.
