An important nursing intervention is maintaining safe glucose levels in the newborn. A common practice is to feed infants either breast milk or formula if glucose screening shows results of 40 to 45 mg/dL or less.

will result in increased in sling production, causing a further drop in the blood glucose
level. Milk provides a longer-lasting supply of glucose for the newborn.
