Like us when we experience sensory overload and adjust by leaving the situation, the newborn will look away to reduce the intensity of the interaction. Showing increased alertness and eye contact, responding with coordinated, synchronous body movement, and drifting off to deep sleep to shut out the interaction are not characteristic of the overstimulated infant's behavior.
