Tamoxifen is used after surgery to suppress growth of tumors that are estrogen receptor positive. Tamoxifen blocks estrogen, thereby removing a contributing factor to tumor growth.

Risk factors include family history, early menopause, smoking, caffeine and alcohol use, low calcium intake, and sedentary lifestyle. At highest risk are small-boned, fair-skinned, white women of Northern European descent and Asian women.
