Penicillin and sulfa are effective against urinary tract infections and can be taken while breastfeeding. Fluid intake should be increased, not limited. Acidifying the urine rather than alkalinizing it may be recommended. The perineum should be cleansed from front to back to minimize contamination of the urethra.
