Paired comparison is a measurement technique that involves presenting the respondent with two objects and asking the respondent to pick the preferred objects. More than two objects may be presented, but comparisons are made in pairs. If a researchers wishes to compare four brands, six comparisons will be necessary. This is determined with the following equation:

number of comparisons = (n)(n-1)/2 = (4)(4-1)/2 = 12/2 = 6
