Answer to Question 1

Rational motives are conscious, logical reasons for making a purchase. For instance, you may buy a specific book because you are required to read it for your English assignment. Emotional motives relate more to feelings. For example, you may buy a book because it reminds you of your childhood.

Employers also make decisions based on rational and emotional motives. Your skills and abilities provide a rational motive for hiring. If all job applicants have the same skills, however, a candidate may be hired based on an emotional motive, such as friendliness, likeability, and perceived ability to get along with others.

Answer to Question 2

If you do not listen effectively, you could miss out on information. Also, listening shows that you value the interviewer's time, which will help you form a relationship with him or her.
