There are two independent variables in the study. There would be a null hypothesis for the main effect of each of these variables and one for the interaction between them, for a total of three.

There is one null hypothesis for each main effect and one for the interaction. There are two main effects if there are two independent variables. Therefore, there are 3 null hypotheses in all.
