Margaret's teacher, Ms. Jones, is from an upper-middle class white family and is not fully aware of the culture of Margaret, who is from a working class African American family. Ms. Jones likes Margaret very much but has misinterpreted Margaret's language patterns as an indicator of lack of intelligence. Because she likes Margaret and wants her to do well and not be discouraged, she has assigned her to a remedial reading group.
