Sociologists have identified seven functions that voluntary associations serve: (1) they advance particular interests, (2) they offer people an identity and purpose, (3) they help maintain the social order, (4) some mediate between the government and the individual, (5) they provide training in organizational skills, thereby helpingmembers climb the occupational ladder, (6) somehelp bring people into the political mainstream, and (7) some pave the way for social change.
