In traditional societies, relationships are based on history (the way it's always been); they are diffuse (vague, covering many areas of life); and they are long-term (often lifelong). In nontraditional societies, relationships are based on contracts (which change as the situation changes); they are specific (contracts specify conditions); and they are short-term (for the length of the contract).
