Answer to Question 1

The automobile became the conduit of courtship, providing a quiet place at night along a country road when a young man and woman could talk about their future. At one time, the front seat of an automobile became the most common spot for a man to propose to a woman. It also made it possible for people to meet and date who were previously inaccessible to one another because of distance. The automobile made a woman mobile and allowed her to leave the home to shop for the things she needed for the home, rather than make them herself. In farms and villages, the automobile increased the opportunity for farmers and villagers to seek goods from the big city and became less dependent on mail order catalogs and local merchants, who had less variety and charged higher prices because of volume capabilities.
