 Structural-functional theory highlights the importance of culture to social standing.
 Symbolic-interaction theory focuses on how people experience society in their everyday lives.
 Social-conflict theory links race and ethnicity to classall are elements of social stratification.

 Pluralism is a state in which people of all racial and ethnic categories have about the same overall social standing.
 Assimilation is the process by which minorities gradually adopt cultural patterns from the dominant majority population.
 Segregation is the physical and social separation of categories of people.
 Genocide is the systematic killing of one category of people by another.
